Peter Liefer, President of web design agency, PrimeView, helps prepare AZ high school students for successful information technology careers

In partnership with Arizona State University, the Arizona Department of Education recently held a career and technical skills standards assessment meeting, reviewing the current information technology preparation standards for secondary education.  Professionals from across the state were selected to participate on the panel based on their expertise.  Peter Liefer, the President of web design and Internet marketing agency, PrimeView, recently participated in this information technology panel, and gave his insight on the education Arizona high school students need to better prepare themselves for careers involving information technology.

The standard validation team meeting was held at the downtown ASU campus in central Phoenix.  Information technology professionals reviewed four main program areas currently taught in Arizona high schools, including computer maintenance, networking technology, software development, and web page development.

According to the Arizona Tech Prep website, the validation team meets to ensure secondary education coursework is not duplicated within the information technology program and ensure the necessary skills for information technology success are tackled before students seek careers after high school and college.

“The world of technology continues to evolve, and preparing students for these changes is crucial for their future career success,” said Peter Liefer, President of PrimeView.  “I was honored to have the privilege to participate in a panel to help map out the most important technological elements students at the secondary education level should know.”

Careers for the Future: Web Design and Development

Take a moment to examine this Web page. Everything in your browser window–the blue-and-yellow color scheme, the twelve-point Verdana bold font, and the stock image of the Web-browsing brunette–is a decision under the control of a Web designer. On the technical side, Web developers create and maintain the databases behind some sites and design sites so that search engines could bring you here. If you have a head for code and an eye for design, a career in Web design and development may offer the perfect opportunity to put your skills to work. A career for the digital age, Web design and development involves the design, construction, and maintenance of Web sites–as well as the files that keep them online. Web designers combine text, photography, animation, and sound to create an intuitive interface–also identifying problems through testing and user feedback. Because Web designers and developers work in a digital medium, their profession combines the creative disciplines of art and design with the technical aspects of computer science and computer system design. The Final Frontier: Web Design and DevelopmentIf you’re interested in a Web design career, you couldn’t have picked a better time. With the dot-com bust now almost ten years behind us, the next generation of Web pioneers is forging a new frontier. Over the next decade, continued growth in the online community is expected to expand job prospects for Web designers and developers by 14 to 20 percent–faster than the average for all occupations. Computer systems design and related services (a sector of the economy that includes Web designers and developers) is expected to add 489,000 new jobs during the decade between 2006 and 2016. While your career prospects are bright, your potential to earn a competitive living may prove even more attractive. According to a 2007 Salary Guide released by Robert Half International, annual salaries for Web designers range from $47,500 to $69,500. For Web developers, annual salaries ranged from $54, 750 to $81,500. Senior Web developers enjoyed even more competitive earnings, with salaries ranging from $71,000 to $102,000. Education for Web Design and DevelopmentIf you aspire to the income of today’s most senior Web design and development pioneers, postsecondary education is an important stepping stone. Although you can find entry-level Web design or Web development work with an associate’s degree or certificate, employers generally prefer applicants with a bachelor’s degree and professional experience. Thankfully, you can gain education and relevant experience through a number of college degree programs. Design coursework can provide you with a solid aesthetic foundation in typography, color theory, and writing for interactive media–while courses in scripting language, content management systems, digital media, Web page scripting, scalable vector graphics, interactive motion scripting, and interface design can help prepare you for the more tech-heavy responsibilities of a Web design career. Additionally, college degrees for Web designers and developers often include elective courses in project management, argument and debate, English composition, and mathematics to round out your professional skill set. Between the attractive compensation, expanding job opportunities, and the wide availability of education for careers in Web design and development, you have ample reason to check out degree programs at local colleges and universities, or even online programs. Don’t wait, though–after all, the final frontier won’t wait for you!

Web Designer Vs. Web Developer the Classic Argument Between Form and Function

Most people begin their website project with a search for a professional web designer or web developer and don’t even realize that there is a difference between the two. However, they are very different types of people and they both come to your project with their own points of view. Deciding what type of site you need will be the first step in determining what type of person you need for the project. The Type of Website You Need: Static or Dynamic The first place to begin when choosing who to build your site, is to decide whether you are going to need a static or a dynamic website. A static website is sometimes called a “brochure website”. On a static site, once all the information has been uploaded to the server, it stays the same. It only changes when a webmaster goes out to the site and makes updates. Therefore, all users see the same thing. It’s much like handing out a traditional business brochure. All of your customers see the same thing until you have your brochure redone. With a dynamic website, what the user sees will change, based on their input and thus is a more complicated and costly type of website. A dynamic website requires advanced programming to operate correctly. The programs must execute different results, based on what the user requests. A “search” feature is one dynamic element contained on most websites. Any ecommerce site is an example of a dynamic website. Form – The Web Designer The web designer’s job is to focus on the layout and look of a website. They choose the color scheme and make decisions on how the text and graphics are displayed. They are concerned with the impression the site gives the visitor and how the visitor will navigate around the site. They are usually skilled in Photoshop and other graphic software. Many web designers begin their careers as graphic artists and are skilled at getting the site to have the “look and feel” that you want. They create your image on the Internet. Web designers usually have the skills needed to create static websites on their own. Function – The Web Developer Web developers, on the other hand are programmers. They usually handle more complicated sites and know various scripting languages. Their focus is on the interactive features of a site such as the shopping cart for an ecommerce site or a survey form or an order form. You will need the services of a web developer for a dynamic website. Which to Choose Knowing what kind of site you need in the beginning is important because if you hire a web designer to build your website and you did not factor into the requirements that you were going to need, for example, an advanced multiage form, you will end up with a very nice looking website that does nothing for you. If you go the other way and have a web developer build your site, you could wind up with a very functional site that looks terrible. Design is always going to be secondary to a developer. If you need a dynamic website and the person you’re considering is more of a designer, the project can still be successful. Just be sure to have them show you some websites with some dynamic functionality that they have built to make sure that can handle your job. If the person you are considering is more of a developer, check their portfolio and make sure that they have the resources to partner with designers to produce a high quality website. If you’re still not sure which way to go, web designer or web developer, you would be better off leaning towards the web designer because the designer deals with that all-important first impression. Most Internet users decide within the first 3 seconds, whether or not they are going to stay on a site. Your project will be successful with a web designer as long as they have good web development resources as their disposal. Usability – Where Form and Function Meet Usability refers to how quickly and easily users can accomplish what they want to do, on your site. If your site is difficult or frustrating, they will quickly leave. You need your website to achieve your business objectives and if it’s not, then it is not a design problem, it is not a development problem, it is a usability problem. Usability is the common thread that binds form and function together. When considering who to hire to build your website, a web designer or a web developer, be aware that they both have their strengths and limitations. A web designer will give you the right colors and the right look for your site and they understand what people respond to. The developer will give you the interactive elements for your site such as a shopping cart, a sign-up form or other dynamic functionality. However, design and development must work together to get your customer to buy your product or to contact you about your services.
